Xi Gundam

From The Free Gundam Wiki

The RX-105 Xi Gundam(a.k.a. Ξ Gundam, pronounced "Ksi Gundam") is a mobile suit that debuted in Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway.

Design & Development

A 5th generation mobile suit manufactured by Anaheim Electronics for Mafty's raid on the Adelaide Conference[1]. Although it is a sister machine to the Penelope, more epoch-making technology has been introduced since it is equipped with a built-in Minovsky Flight Unit[1]. Its overall height exceeds 26 meters and its arms are considerably larger than the standard mobile suit's size[1]. While it bears the name "Gundam", it has a shape that stands out as a monstrous silhouette[1].

Notes & Trivia

  • The original novel design from 1989 was done by Yasuhiro Moriki. The 2000 redesign for SD Gundam G Generation F was also done by Yasuhiro Moriki. Finally, in 2008 Moriki was asked to add more draw more lineart based on the G Gen version for use in games, including details like missile storage location and the Tail Unit. These extra details would only be used in the console version of Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Full Boost released in 2014.
  • The anime version of the Xi Gundam is based on both the novel design(chest armor, head, beam sabers) and the G Generation redesign(everything else), while its mostly white color scheme is based on a Yasuhiro Moriki's original color illustration included in the novel.
  • Hajime Katoki's reasoning for using the novel design was respect for the source material.
  • The Xi's anime design being based on the novel one was supposed to be a surprise to viewers when the movie premiered at theaters in 2020, however the Covid-19 pandemic caused a long delay which made them release the gunpla first, spoiling the revelation.
  • The hands were made huge on the director Shuko Murase's order. The process was repeated until the hands got big enough to his liking.
  • Shuko Murase's order was to "de-gundamfy" the Xi, but this was a difficult request because the mecha designers were used to draw Gundams all the time, so it took many tries.
  • Xi's design was intended to make you think it looks like a Gundam at first glance, but if you look at it closely then you realize it doesn't look like a Gundam at all.
  • Ξ is the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet, coming just after ν.
  • The anime design has some original homages/connections to the ν Gundam: Arm Rakers, pommel beam blades and a beam cannon on the shield's tip. Hathaway also piloted a Jegan which used Arm Rakers in CCA.
